A New Experience

Steve and I are from towns of 10,000 and 4,000+ respectively, so high school football is something we know well and spent almost every Friday night growing up watching (or playing in his case - have you seen him?).

Steve and I spent last Friday night at a nearby high school football game. But it was nothing like we've experienced before.

First, the teams were ranked #1 and #2 in the state.
Steve reminded me about a game of his when his team was on the bus going home by half time.

Second, people were tailgating in nearby office parks and parked in parking garages.
Besides the fact none of the above exist in our home towns; let alone by our high schools, nobody would dare tailgate (with alcohol) of legal age or not within eyesight of school grounds!

Third, it was like we were at a smallish college game. There were around 7,000 fans at the game!
That means every single person in my home town plus probably every person who rurally lives in the entire county would be attending.

Fourth, they served both Cul*ver's hamburgers and Sheri*dan's custard.
I opted for the Pep Club's hot dog.

Fifth, a sports station was airing the game live.
And, it wasn't the high school station.

It was a fun night, a different experience and we'll definitely be going to other games. But we still vote for the small town football games. Plus, after there game, I know for a fact there's no loop for them to scoop.

A Great Man

Last week, Steve lost a good friend. Roy passed away at his home in Iowa after an extremely "courageous" 11-month battle with cancer. Thankfully, Steve was able to spend a few-hours with him on the Sunday afternoon before he passed away. Roy passed away in the early hours of that Tuesday a.m. surrounded by his family and friends.

They became friends when they joined the same fraternity. After they moved out of the house, the two of them and a couple other friends lived together - in a strip of old "aka run down" apartments with basements in the middle of the Greek area that seemed to always have a keg going. Or at least that's my recollection... Needless to say, they've had a lot of great times together.

The unbelievable number of people who paid their respect to Roy and his family during the visitation and vigil service on Thursday night and for his funeral, the procession from the town the funeral was held to his current town, to his home town 1-1/2 hour away (in torrential rain), for his burial, and then for the celebration of his life at a local hall (with a lot of Busch lite drank in his honor -- which also happens to be Steve's favorite beverage) says it all.

Roy made the choice to do one of the bravest and giving things...he was a volunteer firefighter. On both Thursday night and Friday, a great number of fire trucks from around Iowa were there and then followed the procession the entire 1-1/2 hours to his burial. The bag pipes, the tributes, the bells, the firefighter salute, the large flag held up by two neighboring city's fire truck ladders at his home fire station as they transported him from the antique fire truck to the vehicle that took his family and him to his final resting place, the fire trucks with their lights on on the overpasses as we drove through Des Moines, the Rest in Peace message on his home town Pizza Hut's sign, the fireman outfit in front of the Casey's, the large amount of people in the streets paying their respect (as I mentioned in pouring rain) in both his town and his hometown are just a few examples of the profound effect he had on so many people and the respect he had in the communities he lived in.

I write this post not only as a memorial to Steve's long-time friend and his family but also so there will be more people to pray for Rebecca and their two sweet, adorable and young (6 & 2) daughters. And, of course also for his parents, siblings and families.

I did not know him well, but I'm so glad Steve did.

He just returned from a much deserved guys fishing trip in Wisconsin last night -- after 12.5 hours in the car -- so this 37-year old is exhausted!

A Celebration of 95 Years

A couple of weekends ago we got to spend three-days in northwest (Storm Lake) and northern (Algona) Iowa.

On that Sunday we got to celebrate Steve's grandpa's 95th birthday! Steve's mom, Barb, and sister, Julie, organized an extremely nice open house for Grandpa Bartlett.

Steve's grandpa has had a very rewarding life and has given much back to his community and church.

Here's our awesome family...anyone that's been around them all together know there's no other family like the Seilers. They are hilarious with each other, and we have a good time together...

Josh, Jamie and I are very lucky to have become a part of this family.

For the long fourth of July weekend, Steve and I made our annual jaunt to Raleigh to visit Jacque & Jason. Here we are on Friday night getting ready to consume an oyster shooter. I was not aware of what I was about to partake in. Since I dispise both tomato juice and oysters it wasn't a win-win for me. But the others seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. We had an awesome night.

But then the next morning I woke up with the flu. Talk about good times...or not.

Regardless, it was was wonderful to see everyone.

But we have really fabulous news...Steve's sister and my sister-in-law, Julie, is engaged to Josh!

It happened a couple of weekends ago - and Josh did a great job. As Josh was getting ready to propose, (which Jules obviously didn't know) she started singing, "You're The Inspiration" to him.

Last week in KC was Restaurant Week. Around 100 restaurants participated by serving prix fixe menus. And we took full advantage. We ate. A lot.

On Friday night we went down the street to Aixois which is a local french restaurant.

On Saturday night we visited a restaurant from our home state that is located on the edge of the good ole' P&L District. We feasted at 801 Steak & Chophouse.

To say we were fuller than full was an understatement. But we weren't too full to stop for pizza on Sunday at another Iowa based venue; The Other Place. OP pizza is just to hard to pass up.

The Penthouse

On Saturday night we were included in the wedding and the celebration of a former co-worker of mine (of course, they are both from Iowa -- as we all are in KC).

Their reception was in the space that Steve and I got married in and had our reception in a little over three years ago. It was a bit surreal to be there again but fun to be there again.

Thanks to fun friends, an open bar and a dance floor (that Steve only touched to get to the forementioned bar) a good time was had by all.

Seiler Weekend

After some success with Wii bowling, Steve and I had a real bowling night out Friday night with Steve/Ann/kids and some friends. Steve fared a bit better than I did. I should have been in the next lane with the bumpers.

On Saturday we visited KCK to hit Cabela's and Nebraska Furniture Mart. Both were crazy with people everywhere so no purchases were made. I then wanted to check out Five Guys Burgers so Steve drove around The Legends parking lot looking for a parking space until I got car sick. But it was well worth it because as soon as we walked in I won us large fries!

Saturday night we went to the Andy Warhold exhibit at Union Station. It was a cool exhibit and we each got a free glass of wine after seeing the exhibit.

When I got home the other night, Steve mentioned he had to come home because he was so uncomfortable.

He promptly realized why he felt like he was wearing a sports bra and tight shorts all day. He was wearing his brother's long underwear (they both got them for Xmas) which was a large top and a medium bottoms. We are fairly certain he has ever worn either of those sizes!

We thankfully made it everywhere (slowly and sometimes white-nuckled in white out conditions) except to Steve's grandpa's in Algona.

It was a whirlwind trip, but we got to spend some time with both of our families.

And Steve got to skin a deer with his dad and brother. Now that's Christmas...

I love watching my nephews. And I got to watch them Saturday night! Unfortunately I wasn't feeling 100%, and while they were a breeze (really, they were), it's hard work watching children while not feeling well...and Steve was there with me the majority of the time.

Our Weekend

We had one of those quasi-quiet but busy weekends.

Friday night we enjoyed sushi at the sushi bar at Jun's in Prairie Village. Steve loves to sit there and watch them make sushi. It's kind of like a child (or Steve) watching cartoons.

On Saturday Steve did what seemed like a million things to the house both outside and inside. I would repeat them but I can't remember them all. I, on the other hand, looked for a dress for the upcoming Napa wedding.

Saturday night was spent with friends celebrating the couples baby shower for our friends Joe and Angie. It was a really fun night!

Sunday was more work for Steve. And I still looked for a dress... My parents are here watching the boys so we grilled out and watched cartoons (that, again, Steve enjoyed).

We celebrated Steve's birthday Saturday night with Steve, Ann and the boys.

Their birthday theme was yard toys for our backyard (which means the gifts are really for me). He received Jarts (yard darts), a badmitton/volleyball set and a HUGE score stick).

Birthday Weekend

This weekend is Steve's birthday.

I'm 1,000 x's more excited about his birthday then he is. He is not excited, so it's easy to be more excited than him.

I'm so excited I may actually go into the grocery store and attempt to make a box birthday (confetti - because it's fun) cake. That makes me feel very nervous and not so excited.

But anyway... We will spend the entire weekend as follows: me making a big deal of his birthday and he getting annoyed at me for making a big deal of his birthday.

I admittedly have not been very good at blogging lately. I'm not sure why because our life is jammed-full of ulta-exciting occurrences...or not.

Some recent highlights from the past weekend include:
- me dominating my husband in mini-golf.
- me doing the unthinkable and getting a hole-in-one on the 19th hole which entitled us to a free game. Whoo hoo!
- Steve getting us lost on Independence Avenue (just blocks, I know, from where women get paid money to do you know what).
- Us finding a Scandinavian shop off the Independence, MO square and me wheeling and dealing for a piece of Swedish glass.
- Steve going to town on every type of "wurst" across the street from the Scandinavian shop at the last German place left in KC.
- Celebrating Steve's birthday (early) with our friends, Jack and Beverly. Martinis, Scallops and beef tenderloin on the grill with a Nutter Butter dessert on Saturday night!
- Swimming with my brother and Nate.
- Grilling out with Ann/Nate and all of Ann's family on Sunday night.
- Steve getting attacked to the point he was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe buy all of the little kids (at once).
- Steve and I becoming addicted to True Blood within minutes after watching the first episode. We have since spent two hours a night watching these vampires. They have overtaken any type of productivity we may (or may not) have had.

BTE Fan Club

Last week I got a Facebook message from my friend, Lance, who I know from college. Actually Lance was my Cy Aide at my Iowa State orientation the summer before my summer year. So technically one could say he was one of the first people I ever met at Iowa State. Of course by 5-minutes into the bus tour, my mom knew everything about him...and still knows his name to this day.

Lance's best friend happens to be a friend from my hometown. Patrick is exactly one year older as we share March 16 as our birthday. He is so funny. They are both so funny.

Anyway, Lance said they were coming to KC for the Better Than Ezra concert and wanted to know if we wanted to meet them out. We had a great time with them. Pat and Steve knew a lot of the same people since Pat went to Buena Vista for a while in college.

These two guys are groupies of BTE and have traveled to all of these far away cities. I was excited I knew three songs.

A week ago Friday I flew out to Napa Valley to see my very close friend, Michelle, and her fiance' David for some fun, sun, wedding planning, vino and more vino!

Saturday morning I got to see Michelle's wedding dress. It is GORGEOUS.

Saturday morning Michelle also had a pre-wedding makeover. This girl grabbed me twice. Once for this picture and once to make me the Purple People Eater with my eyes.

Mini KD Reunion!

I left for my 2nd of 3-weekends in a row of flights and headed to Chicago for a mini KD Reunion with three of my sorority sisters.

It was a wonderful weekend in many ways.

Since none of us live in Chicago, we stayed at Steph's parent's house. Me, Steph, Amy & Angie.

Raleigh Adventure (Friday)

As we did last year for the 4th of July weekend, Steve and I flew to Raleigh, NC to see Jacqueline & Jason on Thursday.

Somehow we pulled off three nights in a row of staying up until 2a.m. That is so not normal for any of us and very impressive for Jacque considering they are expecting their second child in 10-weeks!

On Friday the boys started drinking their Bud Heavy and putting together the baby's dresser. We later decided it should be tested before a changing table is put on it :)

On Friday night the boys went to a Durham Bulls ballgame with some of the neighborhood guys, and we had a girls night.

Two weekends ago the McCulloughs came into town!

I have known Wendy my entire life and she is one of my closest friends, and Wendy & Steve grew up together in SL.

In a nutshell, everyone has known everyone forever...

I was in Chicago until Saturday morning so I joined in on the festivities directly from the airport.

We started off with a trip to the zoo. I am apparently Jack's favorite grown up friend which makes me very happy.

After some boutique shopping and Mike's Hard(er) Lemonade, we all tailgated at the Royals game!

The Festival of Testicles

Multiple years ago...Steve first heard about this festival called the Testicle Festival.

We didn't know where it was in Missouri but, my oh my, has Steve been talking about it since. It has been the one place he's wanted to experience.

As we were driving into the greater Ozarks region OOH billboards started popping up promoting the Testicle Festival the weekend we were there!

So on Saturday afternoon the (adult) boys jumped in the car and stood in line for well over an hour for testicles.

Sadly, the organizers didn't forecast the testicles correctly and they were gone before the boys could taste. But regardless, Steve got his wish, has some koozies and can truthfully tell anyone who asks that he has been to a testicle festival!

On Friday of our Ozarks vaca, we rented a boat.

Nate was the keeper of all things maps at all times.

Look, I could totally take him home with me and pass him off for more than my nephew :)

Baby Evan spent 4-hours in this life jacket and was still happy.

Between the life jacket and grandpa's tummy, he had plenty of cushion :)

Nate wasn't a huge fan of the boat so a nap was a good thing.

That was until he was able to "drive it".

Book's 40th Wedding Anniversary Vaca #1

My parents celebrated their (wow!) 40th wedding anniversary on June 7!

To celebrate, our family went on vaca to the Lake of the Ozarks and stayed at Tan-Tar-A. We had so much fun!

Oh my! There were so many huge fish and such to feed and catch at all times. Nate loved them all.

E wasn't quite as concerned with the fish, but he does appreciate designer sunglasses.

On Saturday my former roomie, and very close friend, Lisa was in town from St. Louis with Scott.

So much fun is an understatement!

The man who took this photo said we looked like ice skating escapades. Neither of us had a clue what that meant.

We forgot to take a photo at Reverse where we were surrounded by 80's movie characters. But we immediately remembered the camera once we hit the rooftop of O'Dowds.

As you can tell, this is where the photos should stop (they didn't, but they should have).

Then the guys showed up... Scott is remembering how happy Lisa and I do not live close to each other anymore.

It took 20 tries to get Steve's photo. Go figure we ended up with a pic with Steve's eyes wide open and mine almost shut (long, fun night).

After enjoying tapas with my parents Friday night, we ended up at KC's new "speakeasy" that is a little secretive but not really.

Because space is limited, you ring the door bell and are led in (although we didn't do it the right way). Their cocktails are pricey, but they are real cocktails and they are so good. Although it will not replace our neighborhood bar & grill, it was swanky and fun and we may have learned a thing or two about fancy ice.

Last Thursday night was Girls' Night Out at the K!

Our friend Monica hooked us up with great seats and a parking pass for a fun in the sun Thursday night.

Good margaritas, good beer, good people watching, funny conversations and not-so-good baseball (but that's okay when it's with the girls).

A few minutes before this picture was taken, Slugger randomly tapped me on the head. We then got our picture taken with him. As you can see, Slugger put his head on my mine. He not only put his head on mine, but he was pushing my head down. It hurt and it was weird.

We spent last weekend in our beloved Iowa celebrating the 4th birthday of our nephew, Ty (more on that later), and Mother's Day with both of our families.

Saturday night started off like most Saturday nights do by me dropping a bottle of Mike's Hard Lemonade on my friend, Betsy's (who also lives next door to Andy/Jamie), driveway while sober. As all good brother-in-law's do, Andy duck taped my hand. Smart man; those Seilers.

Happy Mother's Day to both of our moms. Lucky for us we've seen them both in the past 24-hours. While we've unsucessfully given my mom her card that's in a language we cannot read, and while we did write (in front of her) and give the same card to Steve's mom this morning, I know they both know how much we love and appreciate them.

Last weekend was the Brookside Art Annual. It's a block away so there were five neighborhood parties to partake in!

Anyway, the weekend of April 25th, my sister-in-law's closest high school friends flew in from all over to meet baby Evan!

Friday night was the ISU Alumni Event at Boulevard Brewery!

We met friends there and partaked in multiple glasses of Boulevard beer. Most of the night Steve and I were drinking their new "Maibock". I don't know that it's in stores/bars yet, but it is excellent. I kept asking for a Mai-tai all night since I apparently had plugged ears, but they knew what I was talking about.

Jack Stack BBQ provided the food (& Steve somehow ended up coming home with a pack of buns) so it was a KC night all around...

Last Birthday Hoorah

Last Saturday night, over a month past March 16, we celebrated my birthday one last time. The cards have finally come off the mantle, and it's over until my half-birthday.

We celebrated with Jack and Beverly; as it was also Jack's birthday (it was much closer to Jack's birthday than mine).

My hubby grilled the best filets ever known to man, and we enjoyed great conversation outdoors with even better friends. Good times, indeed.

Unexpected Hospital Stay

Last Saturday night our 5-week old nephew, Evan, developed a very high fever.

My brother and Nate were on their first camping trip together with their neighbors, so Ann and I took sweet little Evan to urgent care at the children's hospital. He was immediately admitted to the hospital because of his young age and a series of tests were performed.

It was scary and so sad to see this little boy we all love so much this way, but the hospital was beyond wonderful. He tested positive for the rotovirus which is a common infant illness but dangerous to such young infants.

After 2-1/2 days, Ann and Evan were finally released and home where they belong.

The past two nights Steve has been sporting this XXL extremely bright blue hooded sweatshirt that says 'Hard Core' in large letters where ones abs are.

Our Wednesday evening walk was full of lingering looks throughout Brookside. On Thursday evening, Uncle Steve pulled up to my brother and sister-in-law's street in the red race car and got all kinds of accolades for his threads that all of the neighborhood kids could easily fit into at once.

Not only has it been to warm for this sweatshirt and disregard the fact it makes anyone look like bright blue oompa loompa; I have a strong gut feeling this sweatshirt has officially become to key to his standard casual wardrobe.

Friday Food Fest

The markets were closed today, so 99% of Steve's office used it as a vaca day. But not Steve Seiler...he was up and at em' and off to a meeting before I even got out of bed.

Enroute to his second meeting, he surprised me by showing up at my office with two large cinnamon rolls. One for me and one for my marketing co-worker.

And then he called me and asked me to lunch. He took me to Blue Bird Bistro. It was beyond tasty. And except for me choking when I took a bite of Steve's food (which I do on a regular basis; choking, not eating Steve's food). It was the perfect lunch together.

Steve does thoughtful things for me 24/7. So, lucky for me, it's not strange for him to do things like this. But these two things in a row within hours on a work day took the cake.

I really hope he isn't planning to break up with me...because I've got it good.

It's a very exciting day for the Seilers, because out of 46 people, I tied for 3rd in my company's NCAA bracket pool and won (a little) money!

I like my college sports, but I don't spend a lot of (okay, none) time tracking the teams outside of the Big 12 and Big 10 throughout the basketball season.

And while I don't pick my brackets by their uniform color, I really have very little rhyme or reason for my picks. So it's only fitting and realistic that I would do so well.

Sleep Stories

On Sunday night I took an entire Ambien. I rarely take these, and when I do, I take a 1/2. My stomach was really bothering me yesterday so we decided I needed assistance getting a good night sleep.

This morning when I talked to Steve on the phone, he started asking me questions and talking about conversations we had that I had no recollection of.

First, he came upstairs at 11p something and I was pushing buttons on my phone with my eyes closed. I remember putting the phone down about an hour before he came upstairs, so I'm unsure how or when I retrived it again. I told him when asked I was texting, but fortunately for others, I checked this morning, and I sent no texts last night in my Ambien fog. I guess I was sleep-texting.

And then he was telling me a story about the bike he inquired about on Craigslist last night. Clueless to that conversation. But according to Steve we had a full conversation about it.

It was craziness.

Mr. Missouri

People mention towns in Missouri, and normally, I've never heard of them. This is upsetting for someone who knows everything about all 99-counties in Iowa. I sometimes feel very lost in this state I've lived in for so long.

But my husband, on the other hand, is Mr. Missouri. He's always going to towns with funny names and visiting people who I assume aren't fictional. I have no idea if these towns are North, South, East or West.

But, regardless of the direction, the only consistent thing is that 9 out of 10 times when I'm talking to him while he's driving, he comments he is going by a strip club that's in a morton building.

If there are really that many morton buildings used for non-farming/storage in this long state, this is something I've got to see. Missouri isn't called the "Show Me State" for nothing.

I bet they must really have to turn the music up when it rains or hails.

Snowballs & Puddles

The weather lately in KC has been very OOC. On Saturday we got the most snow we have gotten all winter. It was a late March winter wonderland.

So on Sunday morning we had a 90-minute snowball fight with Nate & friends.

By Sunday afternoon the snow was non-existent and we went puddle jumping. I learned puddle jumping is very good for your core. And Nate was too cute for words in his yellow rain jacket.

It was crazy amounts of fun. And thanks to two mean snowball throwers who share the same first name, I've got a few unecessary bruises.

Wednesday night we celebrated the birthday of my co-worker and friend, Keri.

Kansas City has a lot of restaurants. We aren't the 4th fattest city (or something like that) in the country for no reason. La Bodega is a must. Tapas and sangria. Good stuff...

And, as an added benefit, a friend appeared and she was on a blind date! And they were sitting across from us, so we got to take secret photos to send her later. Because, who knows, it may just be a love connection!

Leach

Steve and I have been going in two different directions all week.

We both work hard for the moola (don't we all?), and then when you add nighttime festivities such as work banquets which we both had, working out, Steve prepping for upcoming meetings, me doing happy hour and spending invaluable time with my boys, Nate & Evan... it makes for very little "visually seeing each other" time.

So this weekend I am going to latch on to Steve and drive him absolutely crazy I'm sure. And I can't wait. Because not everyone has this luxury, and I know how lucky we are.

The Godfather

On Saturday night, Steve and Ann asked Steve to be the Godfather of our nephew, Evan!

I wasn't in the room when they asked him, but when I walked back into the room Steve was going on about the ring he is going to get with a big "G" since he is now the Godfather.

I told him a good first step as the Godfather would be to actually touch his Godson.

But that has yet to happen.

And it probably won't happen until he awkwardly holds Evan at the baptism. I am going to take so many pictures in those 10-seconds, it's going to be like the paparazzi times 1,000.

On Monday, I turned 35 (as did my brother).

Ouch.

I've never had an issue with turning any age. And I think I'm good for awhile. I believe I'll love 40 because we're going on an unbelievable trip with Steve and Ann that none of them are yet aware of when we all turn 40. So 50 may be the next "issue" birthday. And that's in 15-years. I was 20 15-years ago and while it was a long time ago, it doesn't really seem like it.

It's crazy to think about! I fake cried to Steve about me being 35 last night. That didn't get me very far since Steve has been 35 for 7-months, and since he busted me on my fake crying 8-years ago.

I had a wonderful Monday birthday at work, I had lunch outside on a patio in Westport with my hubby and spent the night celebrating with my brother and family. It was truly a great day. And today is St. Patrick's Day so the festivities continue!

Our nephew, Evan Thomas, was born at 2:08 p.m. yesterday, 3.9.09. Evan weighs a whopping 9-lb. 12-oz. and is 20-1/2" long. He is so cute & chubby!

Like Nate, I rushed to the hospital after he was born, so I was the first relative besides his parents he met. So I'm banking on that making me "E's" (my name for him) favorite non-parental person forever.

As you can see, he is the perfect completion to Steve, Ann and Nate's family...

First Fridays

On the first Friday of each month, local art galleries and studios are open free to the public from 6-9 p.m.

Add in a few drinks, and it's like a pub crawl with a booster shot of culture.

Grandparents

My Grandma Book broke her hip in two places a few days ago, and is in the hospital recovering in Florida. Please keep her in your thoughts.

I know it's life, but it's still sad to see those we love being hurt, in pain and getting older.

Steve and I are extremely fortunate to have three living grandparents who have all been able to know their great grandsons. My Grandma Book is 88, my Grandpa Book is 91 and Steve's Grandpa Bartlett is 92 (they may even be a year older than I'm writing). Amazingly, they all live at home, and my grandparents still winter in Florida.

But we also lost our other three grandparents way too early.

I lost my Grandpa Bird when I was six in June of 1981 (after 1st grade) from cancer.

I lost my Grandma Bird on March 7, 1995 from the devastating affects of Parkinson's Disease right before my 21st birthday and Spring Break in Cancun (I'll never forget going to her funeral in Shenandoah (SW Iowa) and having to drive/ride all the way to Minneapolis that afternoon/night afterwards to catch my flight).

Steve's Grandpa Seiler was gone before he was born, and his Grandma Seiler passed away when he was very young so he didn't get the chance to know them.

Steve's Grandma Bartlett sadly passed away when Steve was 22/23 years old after much time on dialysis.

(My apologies to our parents if I've gotten some of the timing wrong.)

It's saddening and maddening that they got sick so young and missed out on retirement, being snowbirds and being alive when their grandchildren got married and started having children. But, again, I know that's life and that's why each person has the responsibility to make the most of each day.

And then there is the flip side of the life cycle. We will have a new family member join the world sometime in the next three-days! And we have four other little boys in our family who will luckily be able to say they knew some of their great-grandparents.

Wednesday through Friday I did the work, conference thing. My conference was at Mandalay Bay and I got some good walking time back and forth to the MGM Grand. I love my MGM Grand in Vegas as it's always a good time.

I truly enjoy traveling alone, and Vegas is the perfect playground for a mix of work, fun, escapism and pleasure. And I got it all...

Friday afternoon Steve flew in and we enjoyed a long weekend at Caesar's Palace that included sunny warm weather, lots of walking, funny gambling, two great dinners at Trevi and Boa Steakhouse, a fabulous show and more.

Besides Steve pretty much wiping out on hundreds of porn cards Friday night in front of thousands of people (none of whom slipped) on the strip, there isn't anything too juicy that needs to stay in Vegas. But we might keep a few secrets just because.

Saturday night (2.21) was my company's annual awards banquet for our professionals. It's not an awards banquet for the home office. Nor was the following awards banquet three days later. So no awards for me...but all fun festivities.

The event was at Union Station, and it was breathtakingly beautiful. I now remember why we got our winter wedding pictures taken there (which I still need to order. It's always gnawing at me). I thought maybe I'd wait until her prices quadruple until I place my order.

Surprise! It's Diapers!

My sister-in-law, Ann, has been dead-set on NOT having any type of baby shower.

But those closest to her, of course, do not listen to her wishes.

Angie (friend from teaching), Rita (sorority sister) and I threw a surprise baby "diaper" shower last Friday at a local Mexican restaurant.

Somehow this 6-week secret never made it to Ann. My brother was also in on the plan and was a major help securing email addresses. I would have felt badly hacking into their computer.

He also transported Ann to the surprise destination. Ann is not a "late person" and, as anyone would be, was getting frustrated that my brother was doing everything slow and everything was taking so long. On the way to the surprise, Nate told his parents that when they get home they would have to go into his bedroom for time out!

Ann soon realized why my brother was being so slow! And to say she was surprised is an understatement!

Baby Boy Book Baby Shower

Baby Boy Book will be here in early March. My brother's firm threw Steve, Ann and Nate a very nice baby shower last Wednesday.

And since I work three floors below my brother, I got to join in on the festivities!

Wednesday celebrated the first birthday of our youngest nephew, "aka lil' Steve Seiler" Cael! Happy 1st Birthday, Cael!

On Saturday in Des Moines, they are celebrating Cael's birthday and Steve's dad's birthday, Jer.

It is 4:40p.m. on Friday afternoon as I write this, and I honestly have no idea if my husband is in Kansas City, in his car on his way to DSM, or in Dez Monez.

Or maybe even none of the above.

He's been planning to go to DSM today and drive back early tomorrow afternoon. I can't go because I have a work awards banquet Saturday night Steve "gets" to go to. But he mentioned Iowa may get snow, it's a long 6-hours in the car for a short time, etc, etc, etc.

I have left him voicemails. I have emailed his sister asking if she knows where he is. I have called my brother.

Steve Seiler is no where to be found. But I'm not worried because the one thing I know is that he can run...but he can't hide.

Camo Valentine's Day

My husband is leaving me for Valentine's Day.

I am completely fine with him leaving, because he's going to have a fun(ny) time at the Ducks Unlimited Banquet with Mark. Plus, they tried to go last year and a little thing called Mark's future daughter took the cake the night of last year's banquet.

Yep, Mark and Steve are staying overnight together on Valentine's Day in Albany, Mizzoura (I think it's fitting to pronounce it this way for this situation). And if they know what's good for them, they are going to score their "chicks" back home in KC some sweet camo loot.

I Think I Need A Tetanus Shot

Thanks to my genetically blessed DNA, I have had multiple moles removed. I've always dutifully spent the following two-weeks tending to their recovery.

Recently I had two removed from my back. Unfortunately, they are in places hands don't easily reach. So Steve became the lucky recipient of being responsible for applying ointment and bandages to my back every day for two-weeks.

The first couple of days I didn't pay attention to the bandages he was using. But then I saw what is pictured below, and the following conversation immediately ensued:

Steve: I don't know, but they are definitely older than you.

Me: And why are the bandages in a BIOHAZARD bag?

Steve: You don't need to know.

Beth: Where the hell did you get these?

Steve: At a sale.

Beth: What kind of sale?

Steve: At a sale where they sell junk. They came with a bag of junk.

Beth: Oh my god! You have been covering multiple open wounds on my back with 50-year old bandages that came in a BIOHAZARD bag?

Steve: Yep.

Sunday Funday

Sunday was a Funday for Ann and me.

In December 2001, Steve and I were given a $30 gift certificate (before gift cards were mainstream) to enjoy the VIP Room at the Cinemark Theater on the Plaza.

It's now February 2009 and we still are hanging out with this gift certificate. It's not that we haven't discussed using it. We have just not found a movie we both wanted to see enough to do it in a special room. So it's been hanging out with our (aka Steve's) other coupons...which is a separate post in itself.

On Sunday, Steve kindly suggested Ann and I go to "He Just Not That Into You" VIP style.

A private auditorium with about 40 comfy leather recliners, wine (for me), Mr. Pibb (for Ann), a personal pizza and a server throughout the movie is exactly what this 9-month pregnant woman and her sister-in-law deserved!

It goes unsaid why Ann deserved this. Mine is more of a stretch, but in a few weeks, I will be taking care of my nephew and will have the important role at the hospital of touching up Ann's make-up and hair after Baby Boy Book is born and before photos are taken. Some (I realize only me) may say these roles are almost if not as important as my brother's role...

Old Flames

A social media site like Facebook was made for me. I love it, love it, love it. When I joined 1-1/2 years ago or so, I knew three people on it. Now I know something like 450 people.

Steve understands none of it. Facebook is the opposite of everything Steve Seiler. It is not his thing.

I've created a group for my sorority, and FB has been a great way, in general, to connect with high school friends and with Iowa Staters.

One of the many great things about the Greek system at Iowa State was not only that it was huge, but with all of the houses being so close and within walking distance, you knew a lot of people just from being around and about.

Someone created a new group on Sunday dealing with FAC (Friday After Class) at People's. When I joined there were around 10-members. This group has spread like wildfire, and now there are over 700 people who belong to this group.

Over lunch today I was looking through the members for this group and saw a name that looked familar but I couldn't figure out why.

And then it hit me...

It was Steve's college girlfriend.

And I got all excited.

I have only seen her once from afar. And to Steve's chagrin, I'm sure, I was wearing a big pink flower in my hair. I have never talked to her, but I really liked seeing her because they dated for a quite a while. She's cute, blond and tall (well, taller than 5' 2-1/2").

I immediately called Steve. I got his voicemail, so I left a message telling him I thought the profile I saw for "blank blank blank" was his college girlfriend based on her name and what she looked like, and I mentioned how we have five mutual friends...blah blah blah. Again, I was excited.

Steve then left me a voicemail informing me in a very businesslike manner that he was not aware of her married last name so he could not tell me if it was her or not.

That is soooo not the response I wanted from him. As I listened to his message I asked myself, "How are Steve and I so completely different people?" It reminded me that opposites, indeed, can and do attract!

Not the Super Bowl, but a form of it.

On Sunday while I was out and about, I received the following text from my husband:
"Went to play football with Guy and Steve."

I seriously laughed out loud in the middle of the store.

Guy lives across the street from Steve/Ann. We've gotten to know Guy well and he's a blast to be around. I laughed that my husband, brother and Guy were going to play football.

It turned out 10-15 mid-30ish aged guys were "eye candy" in one of those grassy knolls on Ward Parkway going towards the Country Club Plaza as they played one-touch football. They said they received some honks and even accidently pelted a mini-van.

A couple hours later, in walks the Steve's into our house. They both were muddy (who knew touch football was so muddy) and neither of them were walking normally.

As the night progressed at the Super Bowl party at Steve/Ann's, both of the Steve's were sitting strangely, walking even more strangely and at about a 10% of Nate's speed.

Not surprisingly, they are ready to do it again. It must be that high school "Athlete of the Year" coming out in both of them...
